OpenAI drops ChatGPT Business to $20/seat and launches pay-as-you-go Codex pricing as enterprise adoption accelerates with 2 million weekly builders.

OpenAI cut ChatGPT Business pricing by 20% and introduced pay-as-you-go Codex seats as the AI coding tool’s enterprise user base grew sixfold since January 2026.

The annual ChatGPT Business subscription drops from $25 to $20 per seat, effective immediately. More significantly for engineering teams, Codex-only seats now carry no fixed fee—usage bills purely on token consumption.

    What’s Actually Changing

Teams on ChatGPT Business and Enterprise can now add dedicated Codex seats without rate limits. The token-based billing replaces the previous bundled pricing model, giving finance teams clearer visibility into AI spend across projects and departments.

Standard ChatGPT Business seats still include Codex access but with usage caps. The new structure essentially creates two tiers: unlimited Codex for power users, capped access for everyone else.

OpenAI is sweetening the deal with $100 in credits per new Codex team member, maxing out at $500 per workspace. The offer targets ChatGPT Business accounts adding Codex-only seats.

    The Numbers Behind the Move

Over 9 million paying business users now rely on ChatGPT for work. Codex specifically claims 2 million weekly builders—though recent data suggests that figure has climbed past 3 million. Within enterprise accounts, Codex adoption jumped 6x year-to-date.

Perhaps more telling: nearly half of Codex usage now involves non-coding tasks. What launched as a software engineering tool has morphed into something broader.

Notion, Ramp, Braintrust, and Wasmer are among the companies OpenAI cites as active Codex users. The common thread across these deployments appears to be workflow automation rather than pure code generation.

    Timing Isn’t Coincidental

This pricing shift arrives alongside major Codex feature updates announced the same day. The tool now operates across multiple applications, runs background tasks, and includes a built-in browser for web prototyping. Plugins and Automations expand integration options with existing enterprise systems.

The pay-as-you-go model removes friction for teams testing these new capabilities. Small pilots can spin up without committing to seat licenses, prove value on specific workflows, then scale.

OpenAI faces intensifying competition from Anthropic’s Claude Code and standalone tools like Cursor. The pricing flexibility suggests OpenAI is prioritizing market share capture over per-seat revenue optimization—a classic land-and-expand play betting that usage will compound once teams integrate Codex into daily workflows.

For enterprise buyers evaluating AI coding assistants, the elimination of rate limits on dedicated seats changes the calculus. Token-based billing rewards efficient prompting while removing the artificial constraints that previously capped heavy users.
